CFB Esquimalt Jetty Switchgear Supply

April 2011 – September 2011

Design, supply, and install new jetty mount 12.5KV switchgear to replace aged equipment.

Outdoor electrical equipment on BC’s west coast often ages and requires replacement prematurely through exposure to moisture and salt air.

At CFB Esquimalt, four jetty mount switchgear cubicles were deemed to require replacement due to excessive rust.

Each new switchgear lineup had to fit in place of the existing equipment, which fed all the ships in port at the base while connected to shore power.

Each new lineup included two incoming cable sections at 12.5KV, digital feeder paralleling controls, and a SF6 load break switch and breaker section with a SEL-787 digital protection relay.

They also feature marine grade aluminum construction and powder coating to prevent future rust and decay.

Standards used for these studies included:

  • CSA C22.2 No 31-04 – Switchgear Assemblies
  • CSA C2.1-06 Single Phase and Three Phase Liquid Filled Distribution transformers
  • IEEE 242-2001 – IEEE Recommended Practice for Protection and Coordination of Industrial and Commercial Power Systems (IEEE Buff Book)
  • Canadian Electrical Code 2009
